Serving Native American Families Workshop

Purpose: To improve care interactions and outcomes for Native American women who are pregnent and their families by increasing familiarity with local tribal communities.

Program Overview:This workshop will enable you to feel confident when working with patients from Michigan's many diverse tribal nations. Learn how you can effectively communicate with and support Native American women and their families during the prenatal, labor/delivery, and postpartum periods. Meet your local tribal community's maternal child health staff and learn how home visiting services are mutually beneficial to you and your team. This participatory workshop will consist of an informational presentation, networking over light refreshments, and small group, facilitated discussions. Topics we'll explore include:

• Common Native American sacred objects that you might see in your practice
• Introduction to UP tribes and tribal health care systems
• Native American traditional pregnancy and postpartum practices
• Infant mortality prevention initiatives in the tribal context
